SOTW: Shabbos Goy

The strange, funny and meaningful things that happen out in the trenches as Chabad representatives go about their business . . .

Episode 7/8:

Shneur Brook – Shelton, CT

Eli, a guy from my community, was helping me build the Sukkah for our Chabad House. It was a big project, and Eli was an awesome help. At some point, Eli told me that we needed to go to The Home Depot to pick up some more supplies. We drove together, and were walking through the aisles looking for the items that we needed, when some random guy approached us. “Hey, are you a rabbi?” He had an important question for me, he said. He heard about the concept of a Shabbos goy, and he wanted to know if there was a form he could fill out and sign up to be the local Shabbos goy. Such a form doesn’t exist yet, I told him, but I appreciate the offer. Maybe the beginning of something?
