Zambia’s brand-new Chabad rabbi Mendy Hertzel recently met with the president of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, at a dinner hosted in President Hichilema’s honor by Israel’s President Isaac Hertzog at the President’s Residence in Israel.
President Hertzog’s office invited Rabbi Hertzel, who directs Chabad of Zambia with his wife Rivky, to join the dinner as a representative of Zambia’s Jewish community.
President Hertzog gave President Hichilema a crash course in the history of Chabad and its presence around the world, before introducing Hertzel: “This is the Chabad shliach to Zambia,” President Hertzog proudly said. Rabbi Hertzel took the opportunity to invite President Hichilema to the Hachnasat Sefer Torah ceremony that will take place in Zambia this month.
President Hichilema was very taken by the meeting, encouraging the Hertzels to continue their work advancing Judaism in Zambia.
