In his press conference following receiving confirmation of the killings in Mumbai last Friday, Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, Chairman, of the worldwide Educational and Social Services arms of the Chabad-Lubavitch Movement, called upon Jewish women and girls, "to brighten the profound darkness the world is witnessing, and usher in the Shabbat by lighting the traditional Shabbat candles, 18 minutes before sunset."
He concluded his remarks, "I am certain that this would be Gaby’s and Rivkah’s wish."
The results of this call, and of an effort by shluchim and shluchos, is a widespread resurgence by women all around the world who have begun to light Shabbat candles.
Following is a letter from Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg's colleagues around the world, with the first list of names of women and girls who have joined the candle-lighting campaign in Gavi's and Rivki's memory.
The list will be presented to the families by Rabbi Krinsky.
To the Families of Rivki and Gavi Holtzberg
Your pain is shared by us, every Shliach and Shlucha in hundreds of cities and countries around the world.
The Shluchim and Shluchos networks have been barraged with an outpouring of shared sorrow. Most of all, we have asked ourselves what we can do to honor the memory of your extraordinary children and to bring comfort to your families. Erev Shabbos, when we heard the tragic news, many shluchim sent out emails asking the women and girls in their communities to bentch licht, echoing the earlier words of Rabbi Rosenberg.
Hundreds of emails came pouring in to Shluchim around the world, many from women who had never benched licht before.
The following is a partial list of names, followed by a selection of the emails sent to Shluchim over the past few days. These emails, although filled with sadness, are a collective testimony to the resolve of so many to respond to darkness with increased light.
It is our hope that they bring you some measure of comfort in the days and weeks to come.
