Rave Reviews for New Book Catalog

By , BROOKLYN, NY

The Kehot Publication Society and Merkos Publications, the publishing arms of the Lubavitch movement, announced the publication of their new, combined 2004/5764 catalog. The two catalogs are bound together, back-to-back.

Copies of the catalog were mailed to thousands of homes in the U.S. and Canada and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Kudos have been coming in steadily to Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn, praising the updated and restructured catalog.

The sleek, glossy and colorful new edition boasts a veritable treasure trove of Chasidic thought and standard Jewish texts. From the esoteric and the erudite to the practical and whimsical, there is something for every age and every level.

Here you will find the classic Chasidic texts of the Rebbes of Chabad-Lubavitch, beginning with the founder of general Chasidism, the Baal Shem Tov. You will find books on mysticism, history, liturgy, festivals, laws and more. You will also find cookbooks, musical albums, videos and cd’s, and a state-of-the-art Chabad library CD ROM containing more than 100 books.

Of special interest is the ever growing popularity of the “Chasidic Heritage Series,” which offers user-friendly English translations of classic Chasidic discourses. The translations of these typically intricate discourses have been thoughtfully prepared to facilitate the reader’s thorough comprehension without assuming much prior knowledge. Some of the titles include: “Journey of the Soul” and “On the Essence of Chasidus.”

The expanded section for children and young adults has a variety of books to entice children to read with titles such as “A Touch of the High Holidays,” a touch-and-feel book for the very youngest, “The Money in the Honey,” and ‘”The Adopted Princess.” A bar/bat mitzvah registry makes it easy to find the perfect gift for that special child.

There are educational aids, school posters and Yiddish readers. Audio books on cassette and colorful note cards, coffee table books and traveling companions. Even a pictorial album containing some 1800 photos depicting the family of “shluchim” — emissaries of the Rebbe around the globe and their activities.

New this year is a wonderful collection of posters and lithographs from well known Chasidic artists. Interspersed among the 70 plus pages, they add a delightful surprise element to the catalog which keeps the reader on the lookout for the next one. The biggest surprise, however, is the price. These quality reproductions are mostly in the $10-$20 range.

With Chanukah just around the corner, the Kehot/Merkos publications catalog is an invaluable resource for quality Jewish gifts.
